HUNTER: MONTH 5-6 PROGRESS

Happy 6 month Birthday, Hunter!

Celebrating at Marmalade Pantry

And so HALF A YEAR has sped by. We have a fast-growing ‘lil boy on our hands and we couldn’t possibly love him any more! The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of ‘Firsts’ for him, and he also had his Grandpa and Nanna come visit for 2 weeks, which meant unadulterated attention ;)

He gets more alert and fascinated with the world around him, as each day goes by. He’s spent most of the past month sitting upright by himself, and I reckon that makes a world of difference between looking like a little boy VS a baby. He doesn’t like rolling over (and rarely does so), but is rather insistent on sitting upright all the time, and will fuss if he’s laid reclining or on his back.

MONTH 5-6 PROGRESS:

  • Eating – We started off with solids just recently. Not a whole lot, just a few tsp during his evening feed before bed. He took to it very well because I guess he’s been watching us (and likely has our greedy genes), so he figured out the spoon and sippy cup (with water) after the first try. Now we’ll be starting off on pureed food like carrots, sweet potatoes, etc etc. A whole new world awaits us! :)

I have to admit though, I still find breastfeeding wonderful because it gives a great bonding experience AND is super easy. I travel so light with him when I’m out.. I basically only need 1 spare diaper and that’s it, which means I can go out with just my regular handbag when I have lunch/shopping dates with friends. Not anymore! Over the next few weeks and months, he’ll be taking more proper food and soon I’ll need to carry around all his baby food, water bottles, etc. And for this reason alone, I wish I could go on breastfeeding forever ;)

  • Sleeping – He was going down easily at around 6:30PM every day, then mid-month he really resisted his bedtime and would wail/fuss before falling asleep. I suspect it was a bit of a growth spurt as it was for a week or so, and now he’s back to going down easily (ie. put him in his cot awake, and he shuffles around for a few minutes then puts himself to sleep). I’m praying this lasts and no growth spurt anytime soon… ;) On the downside, he now wakes up between 6:30 – 7:30 AM.. which is just a horrific time for me. Why can’t he sleep ’til 8AM like he used to?! Arggghhh. But since he sleeps a pretty solid 12-hour stretch overnight, the doctor said he can’t really sleep much longer :X

Nap-times are still smooth.. still on the 3x 45-min naps a day. He goes down fine for all his naps – the morning one in his cot at home, and the 2 afternoon ones in his stroller when we’re out. But I’m still hoping he does 2 naps a day for longer periods, and make things easier for me!

  • Playing – His muscular action and hand-to-eye coordination improved this month. He now directly reaches out for a specific object that catches his eye, and now passes objects between his hands, looking around for it if it drops. Movement-wise, he easily sits up unsupported and steps with his feet when we help support him standing upright. He also can scooch along the ground by pushing his feet backwards and ‘swimming’ forwards. Quite funny to watch :P

He’s also learned Peekaboo, as the initiator! Previously he would just laugh if we played Peekaboo, but now he knows how to start the game and uses his teddy bear to cover his eyes then yank away… then laughs maniacally ;) A source of endless entertainment for him (and us!)

Hunter went on his first swim this month.. in a proper swimming pool! He actually likes it, much to my surprise. He’ll kick around and paddle and seems quite content.

    WOT EEEES THIS…..?!

    Dipping his toes in

    Splish splash!

    Our lil water baby :)

On a sad note, he was diagnosed with tongue-tie this month. Thank you to those of you that took the time to write/comment/email. It makes me realise how thoughtful people can be, even with random online people who have blogs :)

It’s hard to believe half a year has already passed. It’s going to be full steam ahead from now on, and I am so grateful I get to see him develop further every day. We are very blessed to be parents and really can’t ask for more :)

    Just you and me…

    HUNTER: MONTH 4-5 PROGRESS

    Happy 5 month Birthday, Hunter!

Our little boy is 5 months old today. I barely remember when he was an unaware little baby that just lay there and didn’t do much. It’s incredible how quickly babies grow and learn new things – he is different every week! It’s all quite fascinating to watch :) He’s also now almost 20% (!!!!!!) of my own weight – kind of freaky to think I’ve given birth to that!

    MONTH 4-5 PROGRESS:

  • Eating – Still 100% breastfed. Waahoooo!! I read that the World Health Organization recommends exclusively breastfeeding until “at least 6 months”, so I’m determined to do that. To be honest, I enjoy it so much anyway and I feel blessed to have enough milk supply to do this, so I don’t want to rush in solid food just yet. He is becoming increasing curious when we eat though, and STARES at us putting food into our mouths. Wonder how long he’ll last before insisting he gets some too…

    Watching me eat

He breastfeeds 5x a day, for an astonishing 3-5 minutes at each session. The first 3 minutes is proper feeding (or perhaps I should say gulping furiously), and the next 2 minutes is spent French kissing my nipple (!) and playing with my boob whilst I try to persuade him to eat more. Then after that, he usually emits an angry yell ‘cos he doesn’t fancy being forced to eat more, and then I give up! I ended up asking the doctor if it was OK to feed for such a tiny amount of time, and she said it’s fine since he’s very obviously big for his age. Whew. So I’ve stopped worrying now.

  • Sleeping – Hunter now sleeps from 7:30PM through ’til 7:30AM (yayyyyyy!) when he wakes up for a feed, and I also give him a dreamfeed before I go to bed. He’s rather noisy as he sleeps though, so it often wakes me up at night, arghh! He is not a quiet sleeper :( We’ve also stopped swaddling him entirely, so now he just sleeps on his side (with sleep positioners around him, as he flips around). During the day, he naps 3x a day, for about 45mins each time. Quite pathetic as I’d much rather longer naps (so I can get more stuff done), but he instantly wakes up on the dot after 45mins with huge bright eyes and gurgling/cooing away, and it’s impossible to get him to sleep more then!
  • Playing – The world is his playground! Or rather, Singapore is. Or rather, all of the malls here are ;) Continuing the trend from back when we were in Shanghai, Hunter and I have been going out every single day without fail. People think it’s amazing that I have the stamina to go out every day with a baby, but it’s not that impressive if you think about it – I do think babies fare much better when they’re out. When we’re home, I am constantly having to amuse Hunter, and my throat gets so sore after awhile from all the talking/singing! It’s mentally and physically quite draining. But when we’re out, he’ll be so fascinated with all the stuff around him that I can push him in his stroller and shop/do my own thing. It’s my easy way out of motherhood :P

A rare moment where both of us are at home

He’s been learning to sit up this month, and looking at him sitting up makes me realise how time has flown in the past 5 months. He’s become rather fascinated with his feet a few weeks ago, and will grab at/play with them. He pretty much grabs at anything within reaching distance and it instantly goes into his mouth for a good ‘ol chew ;)

    Propped up on his hands

“RAWR!” says the little tiger boy

    “Look ma, no hands!”

His coos/gurgles amped up quite a bit this month, and he particularly loves to talk to himself whenever he’s in the car. So strange!

    Hunter shooting the breeze

Possibly the cutest thing that happened this month was when Chris was away on a business trip in Seattle. After about 2 days, Chris did a Skype video-call with us. When Hunter saw Chris’ face, he immediately stared at the screen and broke into a HUGE small! Then he lunged forward towards the screen and kept laughing and gurgling at Chris. It really surprised us, as it was such an obvious “I recognise you, and I love you” moment :)

    On Skype with Chris

Happy 5th Month Birthday my precious one. You are so loved!

    HUNTER: MONTH 3-4 PROGRESS

    Happy 4 month Birthday, Hunter!

Hunter turns 4 months old today.. just a day before we bid farewell to Shanghai.

He’s developed so much in the past month, and we really saw his personality evolve. Overall he is easy going and placid like Chris (unlike me, LOL), which means he likes interacting/laughing with strangers and is happy going out all the time with me. BUT, if we’re late in putting him down for his nap, he definitely makes it known to the whole wide world!! What drama. It’s lots of yelling and red eyebrows/eyes until he gets put down, and we know he’s overtired by then as he goes down in about 1 second the moment he touches his cot. Because of that, we try to be vigilant in ensuring he has his nap every 2 hours.

We’ve also now learned to read him and gotten used to noticing his tired cues, happy cues, etc. It all seemed so much easier this month, compared to previously when we were largely guessing what he wanted. Most of all, we thank God for a happy and healthy lil bub!

    MONTH 3-4 PROGRESS:

  • Growth spurt / sleep regression / sick / unswaddling / new bedtime routine – Yep, the poor lil chicken dealt with ALL of this, in the SAME week. The day he hit 3 months old a few weeks ago, he suddenly started waking up frequently at night (unusual as prior to that he was a great sleeper). And yes, I did blog about it, but I also omitted the following…… Since he was already unsettled, we decided to go the whole hog (crazy, I know!) and also stop swaddling him (as he was strong enough to bust out of the swaddle and suddenly decided he didn’t like it anymore)… AND also completely shake up his bedtime routine. Before, it was Bath -> Breastfeed -> Sleep. This is NOT the way to do it, I read, as it makes feeding his ‘sleep cue’, so if he wakes up in the middle of the night, he needs to be fed to fall back to sleep. And so we changed it to Breastfeed -> Bath -> Storytime with Chris -> Sleep. All the changes and upheaval meant it was pure madness for 7 soul-destroying days, the suddenly he pulled out of it and all got better! Now, he sleeps from 8PM -> 3 or 4AM, with a dreamfeed in the middle. Then sleeps again til 7 or 8AM.
  • Breastfeeding – still this same old, same old. Still going with the 100% exclusively breastfed shebang. It’s now easy, painless, and efficient.. which is quite hilarious considering the hell I went through in my first 6 weeks. It all seems so far away now I’ve forgotten all the tears and horror of it all! A few weeks ago, when Hunter was going through the Week of Madness (see above), I also fell sick. Really sick. Within a few hours, I was producing almost ZERO breastmilk, much to my shock. Fortunately, since I had so much overproduction, Hunter was still fine for about 2 days.. then after that, I got better and everything kicked back into production again. Except THIS time, my milk production was cut by about HALF. Dunno why?? My body just decided to produce milk at half-volume. It was awesome. Engorgement went away, milk jets shooting across the room went away, and Hunter’s constant choking went away. I felt like a normal person! Granted, I still have oversupply so he can only feed on one side at a time, but it’s still waaaay better than before.
  • Mr Milk Face, this is when he accidentally pops off me and gets sprayed, oops!

  • Loves to go out – Since he was very very young, I brought Hunter out almost daily. I didn’t want my whole life to change when I had a baby, and I didn’t want to have to give up my daily life and friends… so I just brought him out with me and went about my day as per usual – going out with friends, going shopping, eating, etc! At the start, I did it for me, because I didn’t want to be stuck at home bored out of my mind. But then I realised that it worked super well for Hunter too, because now he is very happy with different situations, people and surroundings. He’s so used to going out 1-2 times daily that he eagerly looks forward to it now, and gets really bored if we stay home all day.
  • Voicing his likes and dislikes – Hunter simply adores attention. Give him attention and he’ll squeal and giggle merrily. Ignore him and he’ll fuss until he gets his attention again. Sigh! He’s also much more vocal now. He only feeds 5 minutes (?!?!) on me, which I feel is way too little. So every time, I try to make him eat more, and he’ll push himself backwards and YELL angrily, like I’m trying to torture him!
  • Self-soothes with hands and Teddy – this was a big milestone for us because it made our lives heaps easier. He uses his Teddy especially at night, which he clutches and kneads at if he wakes up at night. It’s super cute to watch him cuddle Teddy :)
  • Learning to sit up – his back muscles are really starting to develop, so he likes sitting upright. Heaven forbid if you cradle him in the semi-lie down position, he’ll YELL! He wants to either be carried upright, or sitting up.
  • Sitting in a baby chair, but looking rather nonplussed

  • Does push-ups from bellybutton up – Now can push himself up with extended arms so his upper torso is up. Very cute to watch and amuses us to no end ;)
  • Discovered his feet – about 2 weeks ago, Hunter suddenly noticed that OMG HE HAS FEET!!!! He stares at them, plays with his toes, and generally is so interested in them. Feet: an endless source of amusement. Who knew? ;)
  • Discovered his vocal chords – Hunter’s always been quite the gurgler, but in the past few weeks, he is noisy! He will loudly make all sorts of sounds and seem to struggle to try and ‘talk’ to you, with this earnest little face and repeated sounds to try and communicate what he’s feeling. Wish we could actually understand what he was trying to say!
    1. Mr Merry!
